Social Media Wins for Miriam’s Kitchen!

images Kudos to one of my favorite clients, Miriam’s Kitchen, which is using social media to increase engagement and awareness of their vital programs for the homeless in Washington, DC. Even Michelle Obama is on board, serving breakfast to guests and even sending over produce from the White House garden!

Please let it be real, not just reality

images

Yesterday, my friend Steve Kostorowski urged me to watch Susan Boyle’s audition video for Britain’s Got Talent. To say that it made me cry is not saying much (my family calls me “The Town Crier”), but it was incredibly moving to see this awkward, 47-year-old woman open her mouth and sing so bravely and beautifully. I have a horrible suspicion that Simon Cowell is pulling some kind of super-secret reverse musical Ugly Betty thing on us, but I hope it’s not so. I want to live in a world where the most ordinary among us can follow their dreams and see them come true.

DC Power Couples

scan00241

Today’s Washington Post style section has a piece about the new Washington power couples, whose power stems from their association with the Obama administration. It’s a fun story, and brought back memories of movers and shakers who’ve moved on. Georgette and Robert Mosbacher, anyone? All the people profiled in the piece denied being a power couple, which is a good perspective. If you never see yourself that way, it won’t bother you so much when things change and you move off the grid to make room for new luminaries. An even more interesting story would be predictions about who the power couples will be in 2013. The power couple in this photo are my office mates, Lilly and Onda, who are Portuguese Water Dogs. They’ve sniffed out the news that a Portie will join the Obama family in April, and are busy working on a canine guide to the city in honor of the new top dog. We’ve all been out of the office for a few weeks and it’s nice to be back at work.

A Sustainable Free Press

p2070029I met up with one of my favorite people, Jack Myers, at the TED 2009 after-party. Jack is a true visionary in the media industry and a must-read for everyone who cares (and increasingly, worries) about where our business is going. Jack is embarking on a new adventure: a mission to create a sustainable free press. His passion for journalism and his breadth of knowledge about the industry make him the perfect person to tackle this critical issue. Without a new business model, we risk losing the free press forever. I can’t wait to see what JackĀ  does next, and to help wherever I can.
